What’s all the Fuss about IV VITAMIN HYDRATION?

WHAT IS IV VITAMIN THERAPY?

Vitamin IV therapy, also referred to as intravenous micronutrient therapy, administers a high dose of minerals and vitamins directly into your bloodstream. While your body ordinarily absorbs nutrients slowly, vitamin IV therapy allows it to rapidly absorb nutrients at higher doses.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF IV VITAMIN THERAPY?
Vitamin IV therapy has been promoted as a treatment for several medical conditions over the past few decades. The most popular reasons for IV vitamin treatment is to relieve stress, rid your body of toxins, balance hormones, boost immunity, and make your skin healthier. It has also been reported to help with:

  • Fatigue , Pain, Healthier Skin, Boosting the immune system, Increasing Energy Levels, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Asthma, Depression & Anxiety, Migraines, Withdrawal, Hangovers, Dehydration, Skin rejuvenation, Cardiovascular disease, Muscle spasms, Respiratory tract infections, Hyperthyroidism….

These are but a few of the health issues IV vitamin therapy is said to solve or improve through an infusion of various vitamins and minerals! IV Vitamin Therapy has gained popularity over the past few years, and has turned into a wellness regimen-must! It even has a long list of celebrities, from Rihanna to Adele, receiving regular infusions.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF RECEIVING IV VITAMIN THERAPY?

While you’re undergoing IV Vitamin Hydration, you’re receiving a liquid mixture of vitamins and minerals through a small tube inserted into a vein. This allows the nutrients to be absorbed quickly and directly into the bloodstream, a method that produces higher levels of the vitamins and minerals in your body than if you were to get them from food or supplements. This is because several factors affect our body’s ability to absorb nutrients in the stomach. The factors include; age, metabolism, health status, genetics, interactions with other products we consume, and the physical and chemical makeup of the nutritional supplement or food. A vitamin that’s taken by mouth gets broken down in the stomach and digestive tract, and is limited on how much can be absorbed (50 %). If, however, the vitamin is given through an IV, it’s absorbed at a much higher percentage (90 %+). Higher levels of the vitamins and minerals in your bloodstream lead to greater uptake into cells, which theoretically will use the nutrients to maintain good health and fight illness. You will also feel more energized. During the infusion, you are monitored by a trained healthcare professional. If you experience any discomfort, they will adjust the administration rate. If you experience any adverse events related to the therapy, they will monitor you and adjust the therapy accordingly and tend to your symptoms. An IV Vitamin therapy session will take on average 45 minutes to an hour to complete from start to finish which includes the setup and pre-screening review of your medical history.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS TO THIS THERAPY?

As with any IV infusion, there is a risk of infection with IV vitamin therapy. Any time you have an IV inserted, it creates a direct path into your bloodstream and bypasses your body’s first defense mechanism against bacteria: your skin. Although the risk of infection is unlikely, it’s important to know it is possible. Most common side effects are rare and temporary and can include bruising, itching, redness or pain in the site of injection. Also, there is a risk of getting “too much of a good thing”. It is possible to receive too much of a specific vitamin or mineral, which can increase the risk of adverse effects. That is why you will be screened before your therapy for any possible interactions which can occur due to your medical history. For example, people with kidney disease cannot remove certain electrolytes and minerals from the body very quickly. People with certain heart or blood pressure conditions can also be at risk of fluid overload from the infusion. Trained healthcare professionals will review your medical history and therapy will not be provided or altered in situations of possible risk to the patient.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU RECEIVE IV VITAMIN THERAPY?

This will depend on what your needs are.  Every individual is different and there are therapies to meet their different needs.  If you are an athlete, it would be highly beneficial to receive it bi-weekly.  If you have medical issues that you are trying to resolve, spacing out the treatments may be more beneficial.  Other benefits such as pain management, hangovers, boosting your immune system or increasing energy levels might benefit from monthly sessions.
